This Indonesian martial artist is known for his breakout role as the character Rama in “The Raid” series. While the original film, “The Raid: Redemption”, is widely considered one of the greatest martial arts/action films in the last decade, it also helped in internationally popularizing the Indonesian martial art, Pencak Silat. Thanks to the intense and innovative action design and fight choreography of Iko Uwais himself, fellow actor/martial artist Yayan Ruhian as well as director Gareth Evans, Silat as a whole and Indonesian action cinema have gained global recognition. Having been the 2005 national champion of Pencak Silat, Iko Uwais first teamed up with director Gareth Evans for his 2009 film debut in “Merantau” which showcased Tiger Silat also known as “Silat Harimau”. Uwais has also appeared alongside Yayan Ruhian and “The Raid 2” actor/martial artist Cecep Rahman in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the leader of a crime syndicate called the Kanjiklub Gang. He also made a cameo appearance in “Man of Tai Chi” and starred in yet another Indonesian martial arts action film, “Headshot”. Uwais is also set to appear in the action movie “Mile 22” and an upcoming martial arts film, “Triple Threat”, which will also feature Tony Jaa. Here are my favorite Iko Uwais fight scenes.
