9 long months ago I finally got up the balls to fly out to China and start training Kung Fu after 2 years of contemplation. My two big concerns were that there were too many options and how could I be sure that someone would actually pick me up from the airport once I landed in China. Needless to say, those problems were solved by Sifu Wang.
You know those kung fu movies, where they jump, kick and do the splits, most importantly where they break a bricks. That was my fantasy and driving reason to come train. Leaving home was hard, but I had a dream to do badass things and I was going to get it done.
My first month or 3 here was incredibly humbling. Winter Training…. The hardest thing I’ve done in my life. Up at 6am in the freezing cold, 8 hours of training and a serious need for more sleep. With a body that’s constantly sore body, we always trained.
We’re extremely lucky to have Sifu Wang’s training us. Not only is he a total badass but he also enjoys learning about other cultures and as such speaks English quite well.
Learning my first form was… uhhhh challenging, but once your body adapts and you learn the basics, you pick up forms much faster. Overall, I learned Tong Bei, Qi Xing Quan, Yin Shou Gun, Dao Form along with 3 Tai Chi forms and Ba Duan Jin. Thankfully the school is relatively small so sifu gave me plenty of attention allowing me to learn so many forms.
Although it takes a lot of time to train each form, the results are worth it and you can earn your Strength of Body and Discipline of Mind. We all start off with a fist form, move onto the staff – the trade mark weapon of a Shaolin warrior and if you’re here long enough, Sifu will teach you a weapon form that’s unique to your body characteristics
As far as the Sanda (kickboxing) goes, I couldn’t punch my way out of a paper bag. But sure enough, hard training paid off and now I can comfortably get out of paper bags.
Let’s talk food. A lot of plates, pains, and pleasures have been shared around the table. The food is tailored for Westerner’s and is the most enjoyable Chinese food that I’ve eaten, however, after 9 months I sure do miss mom’s cooking.
Power stretching. Probably the scariest and most painful part of training… The first is the worst, but then you realize that it’s not as bad as it looks.
I had an amazing opportunity to travel through China and saw some incredible sights having visited and stayed in 10 cities. I saw the famed Terracotta Army, the Shaolin Temple, and the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival to name a few things.
A big shout out to all my kung fu friends for making this possible. The comradery we built through blood, sweat, and tears will stay with me forever. All the hard training was made much more fun and doable with your support.
